Littlehampton Museum
As you push west along the West Sussex Coast towards Chichester you increasingly become aware of Roman settlement history. Indeed Littlehampton itself was formally just Hampton in Roman Times (Hantone in the Domesday book around AD.1086), becoming Littlehampton in the 14th century to distinguish it from larger Southampton to the west. The late 18th century saw the beginnings of Littlehampton's growth as a seaside resort with a distinctly bohemian feel. Artists and poets were attracted to the area including the likes of Byron, Constable and Shelley. Towards the late 1920s the resort developed a reputation as a family seaside haven, earning the nickname 'The Children's Paradise'. Today the modern resort of Littlehampton stays true to both these roots, alongside a new exciting programme of watersports and leisure facilities.
To explore Littlehampton's Roman history as well as its social, maritime and harbour history head to the newly refurbished Littlehampton Museum just a short walk east of the Look & Sea Centre. Exhibits focus on fascinating Roman excavations in the area including Angmering Roman villa which was excavated in the 1930s. The museum sits within a historic Manor House built between 1790 and 1830 in the town centre and boasts 5 galleries and 2 temporary ever changing exhibition areas.
A full programme of events catering particularly well for children run at the museum throughout the year. Fascinating photography of Littlehampton is on display detailing its changing face as holiday resort. Spot the rare images of Littlehampton in the late 1920s.
Littlehampton Museum, Manor House, Church Street, Littlehampton BN17 5EW. Tel. 01903 738100. Admission Free, open 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 10.30am to 4.30pm Saturdays.

Climping Beach & West Beach Local Nature Reserve
Push west of Littlehampton Harbour and the River Arun and an altogether different landscape of sand dunes begins to take shape. West Beach leading into Climping beach is a Site of Special Scientific Interest containing a mix of sand dunes, sand flats, shingle and plants.
On the sand flats birdwatchers can expect to see plenty of wading birds seeking out the many worms, snails and shellfish that thrive here. The Yellow horned poppy is evident on the rare vegetated shingle (mainly flint pebbles in Sussex) whilst in the sand dunes marram grass is in abundance and serves as a natural binder, without which much of the sand would blow away.
