Brighton Museums Art Galleries Booth Museum East Sussex UK

Brighton's particular edge in museums is the choice of both acclaimed galleries and museums and quirky independently run museums. Recently revamped and now fully accessible to wheelchair users and with original entrance restored the Brighton Museum and Gallery in the Royal Pavilion gardens is not to be missed for its extensive exhibits on the history of Brighton and its art galleries which includes a fine collection of 20th century art.

The city contains a number of art galleries including the Crane Kalman photography gallery and the University of Brighton's gallery displaying work by students. With an emphasis on local and social history both the Old Police Cells Museum and Brighton Toy and Model Musem are not to be missed. Take time to pop into the fascinating Brighton Fishing Museum on the seafront and collect your old pennies for the historic penny slot machines on-show in Brighton's Penny Slot Machine Museum in the Kings Road Arches.

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery

Recently rejuvenated by a huge investment, the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery sits in the Royal Pavilion Gardens and is where to head to explore Brighton's fascinating history. The museum contains an eclectic mix of galleries including 20th century Art and Design, Images of Brighton, World Art, Fashion and Style and Performance.

Situated within the museum is the Brighton History Centre which welcomes any enquiries on local history and the museums' collections. All areas of the museum are accessible to wheelchair users and the Gallery Cafe is on-site. Guided Tours are available. Check the museum's webpages for details.

Booth Museum of Natural History

The Booth Museum of Natural History contains around half a million specimens and various data on natural history dating back three centuries. Interactive displays and a programme of events here make this a popular Brighton family museum attraction.

Hundreds of birds are on display set within their own reconstructed natural environments. Find also numerous butterflies, whale and dinosaur bones and skeletons.

University of Brighton Gallery & Brighton Art Galleries

The University of Brighton began life as an art school, so has a long history in art and design. Exciting new work comes from students here and you can view some of their work for free at the University's gallery. Exhibitions range from photography to textiles. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm. Closed Bank Holiday Mondays. Also on-site is the university's Sallis Benney Theatre. Checkout the gallery's weblink right for current exhibitions.

Old Police Cells Museum

Free to enter and situated in Brighton Town Hall's basement, the Old Police Cells Museum outlines the history of policing in Brighton and Hove. The museum gives you an insight into what was the Brighton Borough's main police station from 1830 to 1967 and highlights include information on the murder of Chief Constable Henry Solomon in 1844 and see old cells where Mods and Rockers were incarcerated during visits to Brighton. Their graffiti is on the walls.

The museum holds an extensive photo archive which includes images of Mods and Rockers at Brighton Beach as well as police memorabilia and numerous artefacts.

Open for the summer season from 1st May 2008 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Season ends 1st November. Access by pre-booked guided tours which commence at 10.30am. The museum is an old historic building so unfortunately not accessible to wheelchairs.

Brighton Toy & Model Museum

Housed under the arches of Brighton Railway Station sits the acclaimed Brighton Toy & Model Museum. Find one of the best collections of toy model trains here alongside around 10,000 exhibits of toys from famous toy makers dating back 100 years.

The museum began life in 1990 and the museum's founder and director Christopher Littledale has been collecting and restoring toys for a number of years. Avid collectors of model railways and vintage toys will also want to call in at the superb on-site toy shop. The museum is popular with school trips and is one of Brighton's top family attractions.

Brighton Fishing Museum and Slot Machine Museum

Brighton's fishing heritage is best explored in the excellent social history focused Brighton Fishing Museum. Find it appropriately on the seafront in the Kings Road Arches fishing quarter.

This museum holds an extensive archive of photographs, oral histories and documents relating to the Brighton's fishing heritage. The museum is fully accessible.

Just near Brighton Pier within the Kings Road Arches sits the fascinating Penny Slot Amusement Machine Museum housing historic amusement machines, some of which date back to the 1940s. You pay a small charge for old pennies to use these historic machines. The museum is unique and not to be missed. Penny Arcade Slot Machine Museum, 250c Kings Road Arches Brighton. Open during school holidays and weekends from 11am to 6pm. Closed during the winter season between November and March.
