Brighton's Theatre Royal dates from 1806 when the Prince of Wales gave his assent for its construction on the New Road site. Doors first opened here on 27th June 1807 to a performance of Hamlet. The Theatre Royal really prospered in the second half of the 19th century under the management of both Henry and later his wife Ellen Elizabeth Nye Chart and has maintained its links with royalty - the current queen made a special visit in 1959. Numerous glamorous names have performed here and today the theatre is run by the Ambassador Theatre Group which is the largest of London's West End Theatre Groups.
An outstanding programme of drama, children's theatre, circus shows, musicals and one night shows including comedy and audiences are on at the Theatre Royal. The Royal Shakespeare Company regularly perform here and Ellen Elizabeth Nye Chart's tradition of annual pantomime at the Royal remains, usually with a twist.
